Since 1974, Father François-Marie Meyer (ofm cap), of the convent of the Capuchin friars of Hirsingue, collects glasses for the poor impaired-sighted persons. In Africa glasses represent a 6 or 8 monthly wage. In certain regions, the first optician is 1000 km away. There is, in Africa, an ophtalmologist for one million inhabitants. Even in France the destitute persons cannot buy any glasses. The former action " Glasses for the Third World " is now called " L.S.F. (Lunettes Sans frontières => Glasses Without Border " and is registered in the Haut-Rhin Province (France). In many homes there are glasses which do not serve any more, but would be very useful in developing countries. Please , send them to the address above:
At Hirsingue around thirty volunteers sort out the collected glasses, measure the optical characteristics of glasses (number of dioptres, etc.) and register them on every glass. They put then glasses in case and make parcel of 1 , 2 and 3 kilos. These parcels are forwarded to the following countries:
These glasses are sent to competent persons in private hospitals, ophtalmological advice centers and stations of mission which make it benefit the poor partially-sighted persons of their country. BALANCE OF THE LAST YEARS: more than 110 000 measured glasses a year. We accept all the stamps new or obliterated by all the countries. (Leave an edge of 2 mm, around the stamp), as well as all the pictures, new or already used postcards. The sale of picture postcards and stamps to collectors allows us to cover a part of expenses for expedition of the parcels. Our action is permanent. If you wish to participate at the expense of sending, you can send your donation to L.S.F. Lunettes sans Frontière 41, rue du Général de Gaulle F-68560 HIRSINGUE / France Têl./Fax +33 (0)3 89 40
