DESCRIPTION
Artemisia
annua is known for 2000 years for its effects for fever,
haemorrhoids and skin diseases. The latest
research has shown its strong effects on malaria.
The active ingredient artemisinin effectively
treats malaria in human subjects with no apparent adverse
reactions nor side effects. The herb, however, contains
more anti-malarial products than just artemisinin. This
makes it more difficult for the plasmodium to create resistance
in comparison to isolated substances.

L'Artemisia annua est connue
depuis 2000 ans pour ses effets sur la fièvre, les
hémorroïdes et les maladies de la peau. Les
recherches ont montré ses effets importants sur le
paludisme. Le principe actif (artémisinine) traite
efficacement le paludisme chez les sujets humains sans effets
indésirables apparents ni effets secondaires. Cette
plante, cependant, contient aussi d’autres produits anti-malaria
que l'artémisinine. C’est ce qui rend plus difficile
pour le plasmodium d’instaurer une résistance par
rapport aux substances prises une par une.

INDICATIONS
- Treatment of malaria caused by all forms
of Plasmodium, especially Plasmodium falciparum and multiple
drug resistant malaria. Treatment of chronic dysentery
On
approval: treatment of haemorrhoids
On
approval: supportive treatment for AIDS patients
by immunostimulation.

INDICATIONS
Traitement du paludisme causé par toutes les formes
de Plasmodium, notamment le Plasmodium falciparum et le
paludisme résistant à plusieurs médicaments.
Traitement de la dysentérie chronique.
En cours d’évaluation :
- traitement des hémorroïdes ;
- traitement complémentaire pour les malades du atteints
par le sida (immunostimulation).

PHARMACOLOGY
In
oral and rectal applications, artemisinin has been proven
to be effective in treating all types of malaria including
Plasmodium falciparum in areas with a high rate of resistance
against other antimalarials.
Beside artemisinin, Artemisia annua contains other
sesquiterpen-lacton-peroxides. The antimalarial activity
of Artemisinin P has already been demonstrated.
Other ingredients are flavonoids like casticin and
artemetin. These enhance the antimalarial activity of sesquiterpen
lactons.
In clinical trials in three different clinics in
Congo, over 90 % of 164 malaria patients were healed using
tea made out of Artemisia annua.
The presence of the endoperoxide bridge is essential
for the antimalarial activity. The inhibition of the protein
syntheses leads to morphological damages in ribosomes
and in the endoplasmatic reticulum. |
PHARMACOLOGIE
Que ce soit par voie orale ou rectale, l'artémisinine
s'est avérée efficace dans tous les types
de paludisme, y compris Plasmodium falciparum dans les zones
avec un taux élevé de résistance contre
d’autres antipaludéens.
À côté de l'artémisinine, l'Artemisia
annua contient d’autres sesquiterpen-lacton-peroxides. L'activité
antipaludique de l'artémisinine P a déjà
été démontrée.
Autres composants : flavonoïdes tels que casticin
et artémétine qui augmentent l'activité
antipaludique des sesquiterpen lactons.
Dans les essais cliniques réalisés dans trois
cliniques différentes au Congo, plus de 90 % des
164 patients atteints de paludisme ont été
améliorés à l'aide d’une tisane d'Artemisia
annua.
La présence du pont endoperoxyde est essentielle
pour l'activité antipaludique. L'inhibition des synthèses
protéiques entraîne des dommages morphologiques
dans les ribosomes et dans le réticulum endoplasmique.

DOSAGE
AND ADMINISTRATION IN CASE OF MALARIA:
Adults: 2 (two)Tablets 4(four) times per day for
7 days.
DOSAGE
AND ADMINISTRATION IN CASE OF HAEMORRHOIDS OR AIDS:
Adults:
can also be taken as a tea which is prepared by pouring
1 cup of boiling water over 2 tablets. Leave to draw for
15 minutes. Do not filter. Treatment is recommended for
up to one month.
Do not boil tablets: the heat destroys the active
ingredient; Do not make tea in iron pots. Use plastic or
glass containers. |
DOSAGE
AND ADMINISTRATION IN CASE OF MALARIA:
Adultes: 2 (deux) comprimés 4(quatre) fois
par jour pendant une semaine.
Dosage et Administration en cas d'Hémorroïdes
ou de SIDA
Adultes : peut également être pris sous forme
de tisane préparé en versant 1 tasse d'eau
bouillante sur 2 comprimés. Laisser infuser pendant
15 minutes. Ne pas filtrer. Il est recommandé de
poursuivre ce traitement jusqu'à un mois.
Ne faites pas bouillir les comprimés : la chaleur
détruit le principe actif ; Ne mettez pas la tisane
dans des pots métalliques. Utilisez plutôt
des contenants en plastique ou en verre.

SIDE EFFECTS
Tea
made out of Artemisia annua has been used in China for 2000
years without showing any serious drug related adverse effects.
The use of isolated artemisinin in several million patients,
including post-marketing surveillance of over 4600 patients
in Thailand, also showed no remarkable side effects. |

La tisane d'Artemisia annua a été utilisée
en Chine pendant 2000 ans sans montrer aucun effet indésirable
sérieux. L'utilisation de l'artémisinine chez
plusieurs millions patients, y compris la pharmacovigilance
de plus de 4 600 patients en Thaïlande, n’a également
pas montré d’effet secondaire remarquable.

INTERACTIONS
WITH OTHER DRUGS
Not
known. From the isolated substance Artemisinin it is known
that it can easily be combined with substances like chloroquine,
amodiaquine or sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine. Please note: In
the event that a patient swallows the tablets as they are
instead preparing tee out from it, there is no danger. |
INTERACTIONS AVEC D'AUTRES MÉDICAMENTS
D’éventuelles interactions ne sont pas connues.
L’artémisinine peut facilement être combinée
avec des substances comme la chloroquine, l’amodiaquine
ou la sulfadoxine-pyriméthamine. A noter que dans
le cas où le patient avale les comprimés tels
quels au lieu de les utiliser pour en faire une tisane,
il n'y a pas de danger à redouter.
